Description
Description
Interleukin 5 (IL-5) is a member of the hematopoietic Th2 cytokine family and consists of 115 amino acids. Unlike other members of the cytokine family (IL-3 and GM-CSF), this glycoprotein is activated as a homologous dimer. IL-5 is secreted by Th2 cells and mast cells. Its biological activity on B cells and other cell types suggests that IL-5 is functionally important for Th2 cell activity. By binding to its receptor, IL-5 stimulates B cell growth and enhances immunoglobulin secretion. It is also a key factor in the activation of eosinophils. IL-5 has been associated with a variety of diseases, including allergic rhinitis and asthma, with substantial increases seen in circulating tissue, tracheal tissue, and a decrease in sputum eosinophils.
